The New Bedford fishing industry has a long history dating back to the early 19th century. The city was once known as the "whaling capital of the world" and was home to a thriving whaling industry. However, as the demand for whale oil decreased and whaling became less profitable, the industry shifted to focus on fishing for species such as cod, haddock, flounder, and scallops.
Today, New Bedford remains one of the most important fishing ports in the United States, with a fleet of over 500 commercial fishing vessels and a bustling seafood processing industry. The city is also home to a number of museums and educational institutions that focus on the history and science of the fishing industry. New Bedford scallops are considered to be some of the best quality scallops in the world. They are harvested from the cold, clean waters of the Atlantic Ocean, which is known for producing high-quality seafood. The scallops are known for their sweet, delicate flavor and firm texture, making them a popular choice among chefs and seafood enthusiasts.
Patrick Moriarty, founder and President of Ocean Spray Seafood, is a third generation fish monger. Pat's father and his father before him owned and operated New Bedford birthed fishing vessels. Once Pat came of age he worked the waterfront for a multitude of local fish houses holding positions ranging from laborer to sales, and everything in between. After a few years he became part owner of Hygrade Ocean Products which specialized in scallops and groundfish processing. After nearly two decades the joint decision was made to sell to private equity backed Blue Harvest Fisheries. Pat stayed on for his five years before leaving to start Ocean Spray Seafood. Now leveraging his over 25 years of seafood contacts and knowledge to assist buyers and sellers in navigating seafood sourcing.
